Phillip Lanzi, DVM

Veterinarian – Practice Owner

Dr. Phillip Lanzi attended the University of Maryland where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1981.

He received his veterinary degree from the University of Florida in 1987. He is a member of AAHA as well as the well-managed practice group, a unique collaboration of high-quality small animal practice owners focused and dedicated to practicing gold standard medicine in a successfully managed practice. His special interests include laser surgery, radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroid cats, and small animal ear disease.

His hobbies include all water sports, snow skiing, tennis, and spending time with his wife, Jamie, and their two kids, Caitlin and Trevor. They share their home with a Golden Retriever, Chance, a Jack Russell Terrier, Spencer, 3 cats, Lulu, Frankie, and Gizzie, and a Gerbil, Ollie.

Kim Smith, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Kim Smith graduated from Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Previous to that she earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology at UNCW. Kim enjoys both internal medicine and general surgery. Kim and her husband, Adam, have lived throughout the country but have moved back to Wilmington to stay. Kim’s favorite hobby is horseback riding and she has competed successfully in eventing for many years with her three horses, Mr. Knight, Louie & Conn. She also enjoys spending time with her husband and dogs (Petunia, Floyd, and Gale), and anything water-related.

Erin Culpepper, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Erin Culpepper grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, and received her doctorate from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She also spent some time at UNCW as an undergraduate and is excited to be back in Wilmington as a veterinarian. Dr. Culpepper enjoys both feline and exotic animal medicine and has completed specialized veterinary training with Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment, as well as exotic animal internships with Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, TX, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD. Outside of work, Dr. Culpepper enjoys yoga, snow skiing, and spending time with her husband and their 3 cats – Chester, Skittlez, and Mr. Miyagi.

Kimberly Ospedale, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Kimberly Ospedale graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Adelphi University. She grew up on Long Island, New York, but has chosen to relocate to Wilmington to be closer to the beach and warmer weather. Dr. Ospedale does not have any pets of her own but enjoys fostering pets through the humane society. So far, she has fostered 17 animals including dogs, cats, and rabbits! Her areas of interest include nutrition, and dentistry.

Allie Keresman, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Allie Keresman grew up in the Midwest and on the East Coast. She attended the University of Delaware for her undergraduate studies and earned a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. She graduated from Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, with distinction, in 2016. Her areas of interest include general surgery, internal medicine, and ophthalmology. In her free time, Dr. Keresman enjoys going to the beach with her husband and her dog Nikita, riding her horse Plum, cooking, and painting. She also has three cats, Rey, Monty, and Dohle.

Marc Friedericks, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Marc Friedericks earned his Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University. He relocated after graduation to Wisconsin to be close to his family, and practiced emergency medicine in large referral hospitals in Wisconsin, and later in New Jersey, for 10 years. He eventually transitioned from emergency medicine to general practice. He has a special interest in wound management and trauma stabilization, and also enjoys endocrinology, dentistry, and general soft tissue surgery. Dr. Friedericks and his wife share their home with a multitude of rescue dogs and cats. In his spare time, Dr. Friedericks enjoys golf and cooking.

Vanessa Brown, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Vanessa Brown grew up just outside of Binghamton, New York and received her doctorate from University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021. Prior to vet school she was a Licensed Veterinary Technician in Albany, NY where she earned her degree from State University of New York at Delhi and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology at University at Albany. Her areas of interest include dentistry, general surgery, and exotic animal medicine. In her free time, Dr. Brown enjoys going to the beach, hiking with her dog, Kovu, and going to Disney World! Aside from her dog, Kovu, she also has 2 cats, Uno, and Boo.

Elise has been a valued member of the College Road and Carolina Beach Animal Hospital family since 2008. She has worked in the veterinary field for over 15 years, gaining experience in all areas of a veterinary practice. She began her career as a Veterinary Assistant, and quickly worked her way up to Technician Supervisor. We are proud to now call her our Practice Manager. She passionately believes in our mission to provide the highest quality of patient care in a compassionate environment that provides exceptional client service and education. You may see her at either location as she over see’s both College Road & Carolina Beach Animal Hospitals. In her off time, she enjoys gardening and spending time with her family.

Sarah moved to North Carolina from Southern California in 2007 and has since fallen in love with Wilmington. She has been working in the veterinary field for almost 10 years. Sarah has been drawn to animals since she was a young girl, and helping clients and their animal companions are her true passion. Being the Office Manager allows her to do what she loves on a daily basis. Sarah shares her home with her wife Steph and their five kitties; Walli, Clover, Penelope, Curtis, and Carter, all rescued while working at Carolina Beach Animal Hospital.

Angela West is a Wilmington, NC native. She has worked in the veterinary field since 1998. Her experience ranges from Client Care Specialist, Veterinary Assistant, Supervisor, to now our Office Manager. Angela first started at College Road Animal Hospital in 2001, and after a brief hiatus to explore alternate career options, her love of animals and caring demeanor brought her back to College Road Animal Hospital in 2008. Angela shares her home with her partner Tim and their two Pit Bull mixes, Walter and Aubrey.

Casey is a native of Wilmington and started at College Road Animal Hospital as a Kennel Assistant in 2007. Her exceptional client communication skills were soon noticed and she became a Receptionist in 2008. Casey has recently graduated from UNCW with a major in Anthropology and a minor in Forensics. She is starting off 2014 celebrating her recent engagement to her boyfriend of 7 1/2 years and hopes to explore future options for a career with her degree. Casey shares her home with her two dogs, Pepper, and Hooker and her newest addition, who runs the show Schmidt the cat.

Kim is a Wilmington native who started working as a Kennel Tech/Vet Tech in high school. She quickly fell in love with working with animals and for the last 20 years, she has been working for various animal hospitals in town. Kim joined the CRAH team in 2017 as a Client Care Specialist quickly transitioned into the Urgent Care Supervisor and is now our Inventory Manager. When not at work you may find Kim at the beach, on the boat, or in a kayak cruising our Intracoastal waterway. She also enjoys spending her free time with friends and family, playing her guitar, and enjoys snuggle time with her fur babies. Kim lives with her beloved dog Oakley and her sweet kitty Google, who she adopted from our very own rescue CRAH’s Paws. Heather joined the CRAH Team in December of 2019 and works as a Vet. Tech Assistant concentrating on animal health and assisting the medical team. She holds a Veterinary Assistant Certificate from Brunswick Community College and an Associate Degree in Graphic Design from Fayetteville Technical Community College. Heather loves working with animals and is Fear Free Certified and is the team member others call to assist with difficult animals. Heather has a special place in her heart that makes sure your pet is happy, calm, and well cared for during their visit.

When not at CRAH, Heather loves painting, woodworking, kayaking, hiking, and spending a lot of time with her family. Heather and her wife Kirstie love to spend time outdoors and traveling. They have a son named Blake and 4 fur-babies – Bella the old Porky (Pug- Yorkie), Ava the high-energy black Shepard-Pit mix, Xena the calm laid back Golden Lab-Shepard, and a very vocal tortie cat named Tink-Tink.

From an early age Brooke knew she wanted to work with animals. After graduating high school in 2014 she took her first Job at a veterinary hospital in Hampstead. There she worked closely with all the hospital patients and learned how to properly preform basic procedures from the hospitals’ technicians. In July 2017 she transferred clinics and started training as a veterinarian assistant where she worked both at front desk and managing the kennel while also assisting her technicians whenever needed. In 2021 Brooke joined College Road Animal hospital as a full time assistant.

Brooke and her husband married back in May 2018. They have two dogs, a 6-year-old brindle pitbull named Mojo, who is without a doubt a Mama’s boy and a 5-year-old rescue pit mix named Nala. She enjoys spending most of her time taking her dogs on runs, hikes or hanging out by the water. During the winter months she and her husband enjoy taking trips to the mountains to go snowboarding.

Isis was born in Asheville, NC but grew up all over due to her dad being in the Navy. When Isis was 13, she started volunteering at her local animal hospital in the kennels and fell in love with working with all kinds of animals. Isis slowly worked her way up to a Veterinary Assistant at age 17 and can not imagine doing anything else! Isis will graduate with her Livestock and Poultry management degree from NC State in the fall of 2021 and will then work on obtaining her Veterinary Technician license soon after. Courtney originally hails from Canada! She recently immigrated in December of 2016 and joined the College Road Animal Hospital team this past August. Courtney received her Bachelor of Arts in 2012 from her native country with a major in Classics and a minor in English, as well as a certificate in veterinary assisting in 2015. When she is not working, Courtney likes to spend time exploring the beach community or taking in some of the sights in scenic downtown Wilmington. She also enjoys reading, exercising, or spending time with her husband either staying active or relaxing at home with their fur babies. Courtney shares her home with her cat Prim, and a 3-year-old Husky/Border Collie mix named Loki.

Ashton Andrews has been with College Road Animal Hospital since 2008 when she moved to Wilmington from New England to pursue a Master’s degree at UNCW, from which she graduated in 2012. Ashton’s love of animals began at a very young age when her mother bred Bengal cats, Chinese Shar-Pei’s, and Afghan Hounds. She was also raised in a house with a menagerie of animals including goats, parrots, ferrets, and fish. Ashton lives in Wilmington with her husband Trevor, and young son, Rowan, along with her two English Bull terriers, Vintage and Stella, and her two cats, Betti Page and Sage.

Over the years he has lived in 5 different states around the east coast, but most recently moved back to Wilmington from Cincinnati, OH! John has always had a passion for animals, and previously worked and volunteered at a zoo before coming here. He hopes to continue in that career path working here and pursuing a degree in biology. Outside of work, he spends his spare time making art at local cafes and learning about the native plants and wildlife that call the Cape Fear region home. Jess is a transplant originally from Charlotte, NC. She spent a few of her adolescence years in Mississippi until Hurricane Katrina relocated her family back to North Carolina in a little town called Matthews.  Jess moved to Wilmington the fall of 2013 and loves the area. She previously worked at College Road Animal Hospital in 2016 and recently rejoined our team this past March! Currently she is enrolled at Cape Fear Community College where she is pursuing studies related to human medicine. In her spare time you can catch Jess near the water; either on the beach soaking up the sun or out paddle boarding/kayaking with her furriend Sophia. She also enjoys anything related to being in the great outdoors. Jess has three pets; Sophia – who is a parvo survivor, Salvador – previously known as Hushpuppy and formerly a part of our adoption program, and Kitty – her elder cat that is thriving in her Golden Girl years. Born in California and raised in Beijing, Lisa found her love for animals with her first dog, a pug named Fafa. After a long move back to California, she knew she wanted to work in a field where she would be with animals as growing up, her father kept and raised many fish, reptiles, and rabbits. Lisa and her husband love road trips and traveling, but always remember to bring along her two pups: Chihuahua, Chocolate, and an Aussie GSD mix, Cookie. Lisa is canine/feline CPR and human BLS certified.

Hannah Sargent was born and raised in Greenville, NC. She moved to Wilmington in 2017 to attend UNCW. There she studied Environmental Science and Geospatial Technologies. She recently graduated from UNCW in May of 2021. Hannah has always had a major love for all animals and used to volunteer for the Humane Society in her hometown. She currently volunteers with the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project. Hannah has four dogs and a cat that live in Greenville with her parents.

Amanda moved to Wilmington from Maryland with her husband and 2 cats. She grew up with many different animals which fostered her lifelong love of animals. She graduated from Salisbury University in 2012 with a degree in Theatre and Communications. While in college Amanda volunteered at the local Humane Society helping with whatever she could from walking dogs and training them to playing with and socializing the cats. She is very excited to be a part of College Road Animal Hospital’s Doggie Daycare!

Danielle moved to North Carolina from Indiana, her love of warm weather and the ocean is what brought her here. She has had a passion for animals ever since she was a little girl and has been working with dogs for the last ten years. She started as a Kennel Tech as a freshman in high school and quickly worked her way as a Professional Groomer. She loves getting to work with animals everyday, including her own shih tzu at home. She enjoys building relationships with both the dog and their owners.

Cheerios used to belong to the founder of College Road Animal Hospital, Dr. Weedon and became a permanent resident after falling ill for several months. He was considered the technicians’ mascot for 16 years, and we still debate to this day whether he was better known for his snaggle-tooth or his love of chicken treats. Regardless, he will forever be in our hearts.

George held the title of the “Bad Boy” of College Road Animal Hospital for almost 17 years. He seemed to always get himself into trouble by breaking into bags of cat food and knocking clients’ belongings off of the reception counter. With his cute face and sweet personality, we could never stay mad at him for long. He was a very special part of our family and will forever hold a place in each of our hearts.

Maui came to College Road Animal Hospital when he was a wee kitten and we all just fell in love with him. We could not stand the thought of adopting him out so we kept him for ourselves. He was a roly-poly sweetheart that loved to spend hours napping on the front counter. He was known as the official greeter to the clients and was always happy to get a pet or scratch behind his ears.

Ralphie was our very own Christmas miracle. He came to live at College Road Animal Hospital on December 23, 2015. It was always “One for him, one for you” anytime you got a snack. You could usually find him on his incredibly comfortable bed in the management office. We cherish all the memories and could never forget Ralphie roll time, and how he selectively shared his sugars with those he deemed worthy. Although he is no longer with us, the memories of how much he enjoyed the last years of his life will remain in all of our hearts forever. We’ll all meet again over the Rainbow Bridge.

Arthur Pants was more of a behind-the-scenes kind of guy. Although he was a three-legged kitty this never limited his ability to run around the hospital directing the rest of the staff. He was always pretty happy with his job here, even with the staff’s incessant dance antics. You see his biggest “pet” peeve was whenever anyone danced in front of him! Something about dancing made him a very unhappy boy. So if there had to be dancing then he would take his 3 legs elsewhere. Arthur Pants will always hold a very special place in all of our hearts.

Hey, the name’s Samie. I am a very important member of the Carolina Beach Animal Hospital team. I used to stay upstairs where the food and beds are and enjoy time to myself. But after a much-needed talk from my manager, I realize how important it is for me to help out around here. I really enjoy being at the front desk where I make an excellent paperweight and morale booster. If you see me, feel free to say hello and give me a pat; I could use the break from all of my hard work.

Calvin is the baby of Carolina Beach Animal Hospital. He has been “helping out” at the office since 2013. Calvin’s hobbies include, but are not limited to: Intimidating visiting cats, getting “stuck” in the pharmacy, then demanding to be rescued, sleeping in his memory foam bed, and ripping into and eating our merchandise. Feel free to pet him when you come in, he will let you… then he will go back to ignoring you.
